Year: 2018
Project: Twickenham Stadium
Architect: KSS Design
Main Contract: Mace
Contracts: Prater

Twickenham Stadium is synonymous with English Rugby, and as such, is a much-loved part of Englands sporting culture. Twickenham has been open for around 107 years and has had various extensions and improvements to keep up with increasing demand for sporting and venue spaces. The most recent extension was to the East Stand – Eco Friendly Facades was proud to be working on this latest improvement to a much loved English rugby venue.

Eco Friendly Facades was contracted to supply our ECP™ (Engineered Ceramic Panel) to the rain screen facade, insulated panels to the glazed areas and also some tiling for the ground floor pillars of the East Wing, a total square meterage of around 1000sqm. Initially, a selection of greys and blacks were presented to the client before the final colour ECP 002 Concrete Pearl in both it’s 12mm and 6mm format was selected. All of our panels are resistant to heat, abrasion, frost, and chemicals. They also have a 25 year UV warranty and a 60 plus year life span. The section of the facade where our panel was being applied had a soft, undulating curve which presented Eco Friendly Facades with a unique challenge. The shape of the area meant that each panel had to be cut to a different and very specific size, no two panels were made the same.

Two different systems were used to secure the panels, our ventilated rain screen with a concealed mechanical anchor was used for the 12mm, and our insulated spandrel panel method was used for the 6mm. The concealed mechanical anchor provides a uniform, continuous finish with no visible framing. It can be installed rapidly on site or unitised and individual panels can be easily replaced without dislodging. This system is lightweight, has a simple installation and comes with a variety of corner options. There are also many advantages of the using the spandrel panel system and it arrives on site, fully fabricated allowing for rapid installation. This method can be used with large format panels up 1620 x 3240mm and has excellent “A” rated fire resistance.

Twickenham’s East Wing was officially completed in November 2018. Eco Friendly Facades is extremely proud of the finished product and to have been included in Twickenham’s latest extension.
